چکیده

Six subjects between the ages of 18 and 35 years old were examined to compare muscle use. The rectus abdominus, erector spinal, gluteus maximus, quadriceps, hamstring, gastrocnemius, and tibiallis anterior muscles were assessed by electromyogram. Conventional exercise was performed by weight lifting on quadriceps, hamstring, abdominal and back extension machines and then compared to low-impact aerobic exercise involving extension of the legs on inexpensive discs that slide on the floor, a technique called Gliding. Subjects performed a maximum effort for each muscle and by measuring the maximum electromyogram, data could then be normalized to assess muscle use during the various exercises. The results of the experiments showed that although there is no external resistance in low-impact aerobics Gliding, the equivalent muscle activity Petrofsky2-vol5no1 3/19/05 11:28 AM Page 136

Muscle Use During Exercise: A Comparison of Conventional Weight Equipment to Pilates With and Without a Resistive Exercise Device

Six subjects between the ages of 18 and 30 years old were examined to compare use of the quadriceps, hamstring, gluteus maximus, hip abductor, hip adductor, abdominal, gastrocnemius and paraspinal muscles as assessed by electromyogram (EMG). Muscle use was measured during all forms of exercise and exercise using conventional weight lifting equipment was compared to exercise during Pilates with ...

The influence of resistance and aerobic exercise on hunger, circulating levels of acylated ghrelin and peptide YY in healthy males

Resistance (muscle strengthening) exercise is a key component of exercise recommendations for weight control yet very little is known about the effects of resistance exercise on appetite. We investigated the effects of resistance and aerobic exercise on hunger and circulating levels of the gut hormones acylated ghrelin and peptide YY (PYY). Eleven healthy male students: age 21.1 ± 0.3 y, body m...

Muscle Use during Isometric muscle co-contraction compared to Abdominal Crunches and A Commercial Multi Gym Exerciser

Isometric exercise has been shown to increase metaboliasm in muscle. By contracting agonsit / antagonist muscle pairs, appreciable muscle activity can be achieved. An advanatge of isometric exercise is that no exercise equipment is needed; people can exercise at home on their own. In the present investigation 16 subjects were examined during an isometric co contraction exercise video compared t...

Exergy Analysis of the Musculoskeletal System Efficiency during Aerobic and Anaerobic Activities

The first and second laws of thermodynamics were applied to the human body in order to evaluate the quality of the energy conversion during muscle activity. Such an implementation represents an important issue in the exergy analysis of the body, because there is a difficulty in the literature in evaluating the performed power in some activities. Hence, to have the performed work as an input in ...
